Riding the panamericana

Ta-dah… we are alive. It’s 3:30am and we’re in Talara or Tamara or something like that. In Peru. They have a Mig21 jet fighter at the city entrance and that’s about it what I know about this town. It’s about 600Km from Guayaquil (60Km/h average speed), 300Km less than our target of 900Km (get to Chiclayo). Outside of our normal itinerary. We’re at a very communist hotel that charged us mucho dineros (75USD double) but we’re too tired to fight and search for something better. Smells like melamine paint in our room. No hot water.
We left Guayaquil at 4:00pm because 15 Ecuadorean minutes = 5 Planet Earth hours meaning we only took possession of the car early in the afternoon. Driving through Ecuador sucked: chaos + not so good roads + unmarked speed bumps (we passed one at 100Km/h) + etc. Peru seems much better road wise: stuff like speed bumps are marked, asphalt is continuous, etc; only issue: cops every 10Km. Border crossing was OK – about 2 hours but people were helpful and only asked for cigarettes. Too tired now. Must sleep.
